Exhibition Only – William González

Photography, as a traditional medium for capturing the truth and essence of being, of objects, of labor, and the very spirit of our realities, has evolved into the contemporary artistic practice of revealing the diverse sensations of the photographer’s critical and sensory eye. Today, it is often misunderstood as “simply capturing” and has been undervalued in collective thinking, losing sight of its true value as a work of art.

This is countered by the complex and subtle act of transcending through colors and forms, skillfully accentuated by the talent of the artist who creates with the captured image. Photography is, and always will be, a testament to the truth of beauty and the desire to preserve a moment in history—conveying, through time, visions and events that no longer exist in the blink of an eye. It narrates a color, describes the cold, or allows us to feel, through the image itself, the pure essence of having found the exact, perfect moment for the shot.

Artist William González understands photography as a vessel of time (because it is always a matter of time), one that investigates the past to recognize and restore it to our gaze. With a nearly anthropological and social curiosity, he knows well that the power of the image lies in its presence within space, moment, and thought. His work embodies a dialectic between metamorphosis and memory, at times representing his certainty and vision of the present moment, offering us the fragile and unstable aura of invisibility, while presenting the truth as a pure and authentic image composer.

His work, then, is an architecture of the spirit—autonomous and pure—seeking to reconcile nature and technique. Yet, his stylistic approach surprises us, for instead of teaching or affirming, it evokes, dissolving forms and details that exalt the beauty of the constructive lines of the self, aiming to capture the essence of the represented place. It plays with the boundaries of being and memory. As a restless explorer of the possibilities of the photographic medium, of the expressiveness of light and shadow, his pursuit lies in capturing the solidity of the invisible, or that intrinsic power of immutability, which is nothing more than his tireless search for light as the embodiment of the visible. As such, his works convey a sense of eternal existence at the right place and time, capturing the ephemeral with a unique precision.

In this context, the exhibition ORÍGENES – Villa de Leyva 450 invites us into the Artist’s distinctive vision of Villa de Leyva and its surrounding geography—alive with history and fascinating sensations. It presents the town in a way never seen before, bringing to the collective eye of spectators the corners and emotions of a vibrant community filled with mysteries, rediscovered landscapes, and traces of the past.
